I am writing in an effort to update you on the most recent developments regarding the status of legislation involving the Department’s budget for the current fiscal year.

A budget proposal passed out of the Senate Ways and Means Committee on Monday, January 26, 2009, provides for a 3.4% across the board budget reduction for state agencies. For the Department of Corrections this reduction would be in addition to reductions previously submitted by the department, including the suspension of operations at Osawatomie and Toronto in February and Stockton in June. A 3.4% reduction for the department is approximately $9.3 million.

I am writing to advise you that the House and the Senate today reached agreement on an omnibus spending bill that calls for an additional cut of 2.75% beyond the level previously approved for Fiscal Year 2010.

This afternoon I appeared before the House Public Safety Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee along with the heads of other public safety agencies. We were asked, in light of the revised revenue projections, to identify how we could reduce the Department’s FY 2010 budget by an additional 5% ($10,800,000).
